14 yr old son asperger's syndrome or depressed?

Question: 14 yr old son asperger's syndrome or depressed?

(Posted by: Proud mama of three ♥ on 2010-02-21 12:49:19)

My 14 yr old son has ADHD, and was diagnosed 3 years ago with Aspergers. He has an appt in a few weeks and I am wanting to talk to the doctor because I am really starting to think that my son does not have asperger's. Alot of the symptoms just dont fit him, mainly being he loves being social, I talked to my son about me talking to the doctor and trying anti depressants. He freaked out and said he knows he doesnt have aspergers and he knows he isnt depressed and that his adhd has gotten better and wants to stop taking his meds. I dont know what to do. He just seems so down lately and his grades are falling again. he isnt very organized and been sensitive. and I was just wondering if anyone had some suggestions. His appt with doctor isnt for another 2 weeks.

Your son has to see a psychiatrist who is the specialist his general physician is not qualified to diagnose mental issues or depression. He is not educated in the medications that would help your son even though he may be the best doctor for his physical health. I can understand your son's upset when you told him about or he may need antidepressants. That's very scarey for a kid. Make certain that you make a list of all of his symptoms so that there can be a correct diagnosis and the right treatment. He can't stop taking his medications that is something that you can make certain that he does. He is afraid now because he is aware of your uncertainty of his problem. Please let his psychiatrist make the decision. If your son doesn't want you to go in with him to see the psychiatrist you can give him a call and discuss what you have observed in his behavior. If he truly has Aspergers Disorder than he should be taking an anti-depresssant already and an anti-psychotic for the anger issues. You really need a right diagnosis. I wouldn't do so much talking about it to your son he doesn't understand what is going on and you are scaring him. I can see that you are a very caring mother and you love your son and of course want the best for him >

The reason he may not feel the symptoms is because he's taking the anti depressants regularly. If he isn't taking the medication and still feeling fine, you might want to listen to your son on this one and take him to another psychiatrist for a second opinion. Most of the people on this site are not professional, so taking him in for a professional second opinion might be best for your son.

He could be depressed because of the meds he is taking also a lot14 year olds are a little bit depressed because they are growing up. If he is social I don't think he is depressed to the point that he needs to take anti depressants. Everyone is not made to be a quiet A grade student. Maybe you should accept your son as he is this might help him more than anti depressants. When you give him those meds did you ever think about how he feels about that? This is giving him the message that you do not see him as a normal person. I have seen people with very low grades and a lot of energy do better in life than A grade students so I wouldn't worry so much.

He wants to stop taking his meds - say once you see the Dr and he gives you the OK to stop taking it. Remember, he's 14 - hormones - school - friends - pressures - adjusting to a new medication - "accused " of having asperger's...... You can call the Dr's office to see if there are any cancellations to get him in sooner.
