Is it possible to have high functioning autism but not realize it till you are 16?
I have had some autism symptoms as of late but I don't know if its possible to get it at 16, unless I always had it but it didn't come out until now
Why do you think some girls with high functioning autism has a hard time fitting in with other peers?
because I'm one of them....I don't have a lot of friends
How do they test you when you suspect you have asperger syndrome (high functioning autism) in adults?
I have had my suspicions for a while but especially recently after reading a book with a person suffering asperger syndrome. A lot of his quirks were similar to mine, except mine weren't as severe. Except in high school where I stopped talking to almost everyone, by 15 I was barely acknowledging the teachers Due mostly to anxiety, started to improve after leaving school, but due to poor social skills and total disinterest in social situations it was 4 years til I got a cleaning job So I was thinking about getting tested and am anxious about it and was wondering what tests they'd use?
Is it normal for people with high functioning autism / aspergers to ask"strange questions"?

As well as narrow focused interests such as 1960s history. Oh and a mind good with remembering numbers like dates or stats. My brother was just diagnosed as such at age 23, is this common or rare? Do I sound like I'm maybe an aspie or someone with high functioning autism?
Whenever I learn new things, many times I learn it from mimicry. I can learn through listening or doing things hands on, but it seems like mimicry is my strong point.I remember P.E. class back in elementary school, and sometimes we would have to do odd races, like running with a baton 50 yrds away, giving it to someone else, and then running back. Whenever I was the first one in line to do strange races or exercises like this, I would try to sneak to the back of the line, or at least sneak behind a few people in the back of me, so that they would be first and not me, and so that I would watch them and mimic what they do in order to learn how to do the race. BASICALLY it's always been things like this in which I had to mimic to learn Occasionally when I'm talking a lot or forming a paragraph, I notice that I might use the same word over an over again. Just words like cunjunctions, adjectives, etc. If I can't find another word for something, I'll have to use that same word. it may sound correct but sometimes awkward Always had an extreme form of social anxiety as a kid, people knew me as the kid who was extremely quiet and sat in the back of the class. Very few times, there would be a comment here and there about " He's going to shoot up the school one day " or something.. I don't know why, as I've never been mean to anyone, and I thought I was on good terms with most of my classmates.I would always have just about 1 or 2 friends. and normally my only friends were my " best" friends, I don't really consider associates 'friends' I've never really had an " obcession" with something per se, but when I was studying Japanese, my cousin's girlfriend who is Japanese came to our town, and she was really confused at how the only things I knew how to say were Japanese greetings, except that my accent is 100 % perfect like a Japanese native. She thought it was the strangest thing in the world. so what is this an 'obcession' of mine for concentrating on the accent of the language rather than the grammar kanji? If it was it's something I've never noticed.Other than all that, most of the time, I pass off as " normal" by many people, although sometimes I feel like I'm pretending or acting. And the social anxiety has toned down so much, which I'm really happy about..So I'm not really sure. Does it sound like I have aspergers or no?
What is a good way to tell my 13 yr old newly diagnosed with high functioning autism of his condition.?
want to explain autism to my son without freaking him out or upsetting him.
Would this be a good place for someone with high functioning autism to study?
For years I have thought of using this backyard small building in my parents backyard to red books, take afternoon naps and even spend the night there just to be alone and away from the outside word. Many poeple think this is odd.Everytime I read a book in my room I get destracted by the computer,TV radio and things going on outside. In the living room I get destracted by the TV and cant stop looking out the windows. There is an art shed studio in my backyard that I think would be a quiet place to read books. The art shed has a very mini porch. I feel that if I took a book inside the art shed and sat on beanbags with some blankets to keep warm that I could concentrate on a book with no destractions. In the art shed there is no TV or computer. There is bright lights and electricity and a plus in heater. Another advnatage is there are no windows to look out so I won't get destracted and look outiside. ts very very quit in the art shed. One thing I will need to do so I can concentrate on my book and not look outside is close the art shed door. Is this crazy? The inside of the door is painted sky blue with flowers. The interior walls are painted sky blue with clouds. The floor is concrete covered with rugs.If you were a parent would you let your kid teen read in a place like this on weeked afternoons? Would you as a parent think its a good idea for the door to be closed so they don't get destracted?Even though this is not my shed the one below looks very similar.designinspiration.typepad.com .shared image.html? photos uncategorized 2007 10 31 shed at halloween.jpgThe inside looks very similar to this even though not the same.designinspiration.typepad.com .shared image.html? photos uncategorized 2007 10 31 shed interior em.jpgWhat should I do?Currently the inside of the door is painted skyblue with flowers. The inside of the walls are skyblue with yellow flowers.Should I repaint the inside of the door and the interior walls if I" m going to out a doornob on? There are no windows. Is this current disign of colors oldladyish, childish or niether? What color suggestions would people have for the interior of the door and interior of the walls? What should I do?Currently the inside of the door is painted skyblue with flowers. What should I do?Decide to take my book inside this place? Should the door to this place be open or closed while I'm reading? My parents said it's okay to use this place to read.I'm allowed to close the door if I want.My question is should the door be closed if I'm reading in there?I obsesse over things becuase I'm autistic. My male friends think this idea is childish and rediculous. My friends and acquantances who are woman think I should go for this idea and not worry about what people think. If You were a parent and allowed your kid to read books or draw in a place like I described would you walk outside and visit your kid? If your kid was in there reading a book and left the door opened would you close it so your kid can have quiet or ask your kid if they want the door closed?I'm in the united statesI'm friendly with these girls who are more like acquantances. They also like quiet and to be away from crowds. I told them about this idea and they said that they may want to join me in there to read a book without noise and destractions. They even told me that they can bring a movie to put in the dvd player. These two girls told me that if the door is open that they wont be able to concentrate and are afraid of bug or dirt getting inside.Should I invite these two girls if I decide to go with this idea?
Is medication necessary for adults who are diagnosed with high functioning autism?
In a world where everyone is diagnosed with something, unfortunately I have been labed Bipolar and ADHD as an adult, even though the symptoms did not quite fit. Upon starting college, behaviors and ways of learning seemed to give way to a new diagnosis which replaced the others . Is this something that can be harnessed to be a positive force in one's life, or is medication pushed on people who are diagnosed with this form of autism? If so, why?
Why do people say they have high functioning Autism or Aspergers?
and then say it is a difference not a disability. If you have symptoms of autism that do not interfere with your quality of life or are sub clinical then you obviously have Autistic traits, I thought that was the point. If your symptoms do cause you problems then it is obviously not a difference.Does anyone know why people do this as I have AS and it is really annoying? Now I have to deal with the 'Autistic retard' stereotype as well as the 'self diagnosed whinging aspie nerd' stereotype.I have just re read my question and realized it implies I am self diagnosed. I am not, I went through a rigorous diagnostic session in a specialist clinic.
Does anyone here have a spouse or significant other with High functioning Autism or asperger's Syndrome?
If so, can you direct me to some online resources or books. My husband has this disorder and I am considering leaving the relationship. I love him very much but I do not know if I can continue to handle his behavior any longer. Is there anyone out there who has a loved one with this disorder and what did you do. What were some of their signs and symptoms. ThanksMy husband does not have low functioning autism. He is very intelligent and you would never think that he had it by talking to him. He just acts weird in social situations, he is shy and has a hard time making friends. He also is sensitive to light ie camera flashing He does not like any type of change.
