Is there such a thing as free therapy?

Question: Is there such a thing as free therapy?

(Posted by: here-we-go on 2010-07-26 15:31:27)

My friend has deep issues with her childhood and it is STRONGLY affecting her life as a young adult. She doesn't have much money to pay a therapist or psychologist. What can she do? Where can she find help?

There is a great online therapy, seek one. Many of them are free, but they take a bit long time to answer

So sorry to hear about your friend. There are many agencies that have sliding scale fees, which are based on income. These facilities often charge individuals, who do not have much money, very little to nothing for their services. You and/ or your friend can contact the Boys Town National Hotline at 1-800-448-3000, anytime 24/ 7, at no charge. We have trained counselors available who can talk with you and even help find resources available in your friend's local area. Please take care of yourself and we look forward to hearing from you soon. Take care, Counselor AH

-If your friend is at a school or a university, many of these places have onsite specialists that can help during a time of crisis and/ or provide resources for getting therapy (do a search for a hotline for the institution). I also believe that many of these would be open during the summer months because of summer sessions. -If your friend is employed, she should also look to see if there is an Employee Assistance Program or hotline that she can call. You will also find that many insurance programs offered by employers (HMO, PPO) do often cover many of the costs associated with therapy (always best to check with the insurance provider directly about any specific costs and/ or limitations). Other resources: Finding a therapist (mentions social workers as well, which may be an option) : webmd.com/ anxiety-panic/ guide/ how-to-find-therapist Online therapy and counseling: breakthrough.com Best of luck to your friend.
