Scared of talk therapy- what is it like?

Question: Scared of talk therapy- what is it like?

(Posted by: Ava on 2010-07-28 11:20:10)

Hi, my Dr. has been encouraging me to try going to therapy, since I have depression and anxiety disorders. Is there any reason to be afraid of going? I guess I'm just scared that all we will talk about is what Im doing wrong and what I should be doing (I already feel like a failure at life and dont need anyone reminding me), when I guess what I really want is just some emotional support, and someone to tell me what Im doing right and reassure me that Im not a bad person. What do therapists typically say to you? Do you walk out feeling better or worse about yourself? I'm very sensitive and just scared that Im going to walk out of there feeling worse.

You have no reason to be scared. I suggest you print this question and give it to you r therapist. It will be a great way to start.

Well let me enlighten you on therapist. They talk to you to find out what your problems or concerns are about. They DO NOT belittle you or tell you that you are a failure. You leave there with the feeling that you have come to a new conclusion about your life. They try to help you find the underlying cause of your problems and they help you to work them out. It is better to hear from a person outside your circle than one inside. You tend to listen to what others say instead of the ones in your circle. It is good to go to at least one session t see how you like them and if it does not work have your doctor to send you to someone else for help. Therapist are not there to make you see how wrong you are or have been but to see all that is poitive in your life. So go and get what you need to get you through this situation. I wish you the best of luck

I hope that it was psychiatrist who referred you to therapy. If not you need to see a psychiatrist for a correct diagnosis and the right treatment, medication may be needed along with therapy. He can refer you to a therapist. The therapist is trained to make you feel comfortable and knows how and what questions to ask to determine what she needs to do to help you. Your GP isn't qualified to diagnose nor treat mental problems
